Windows 8 Takes a Cue from Apple's OS

The Consumer Preview of Windows 8 shows Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) to be making an effort consolidate and simplify its brands. The Verge reports that the new operating systems rolls Windows Live applications into pre-installed apps that make up “Windows Communications,” while “Microsoft Account” replaces Windows Live ID, and Zune has been eradicated completely, although Zune Pass still works.

Rumors are circulating that Zune will be replaced with a service similar to Spotify and based on Xbox Live. The music service is expected to debut later this year.

“The move away from Zune is part of a broad effort to simplify and consolidate the company’s brands into a simple consumer message alongside Microsoft SkyDrive and Microsoft Hotmail,” according to The Verge. The new Windows 8 branding will look like this:

  • Microsoft Account (Windows Live ID)
  • Mail (Windows Live Mail)
  • Calendar (Windows Live Calendar)
  • People (Windows Live Contacts)
  • Photos (Windows Live Photo Gallery)
  • Music (Zune Music Player)
  • Video (Zune Video Player)
